Étienne Brûlé Park: Toronto's Riverside Retreat for Curious Cats and Dogs
Who says adventure sessions are just for dogs? Our latest outdoor shoot at Étienne Brûlé Park starred two fluffy, blue-eyed cats, and the park's open lawns and fall colours turned out to be the perfect stage for them. With the Humber River winding through the valley and the trees glowing gold, it's a little slice of countryside right in the city.
The pair took their time, the way cats do: a careful first sniff of the grass, a few curious paws raised in the air, then a confident climb onto a fallen log and a big weathered boulder to survey their new kingdom. Watching them discover the park was half the fun.
Location & Vibe
Étienne Brûlé Park stretches along the Humber River from the Old Mill north toward Baby Point, in Toronto's west end. The main entrance is at 13 Crosby Avenue, and Old Mill subway station is only about a five-minute walk away.
The vibe is peaceful and outdoorsy: wide paths beside the water, benches for the humans, and plenty of shade from the trees lining the river. It's popular with joggers, cyclists and dog walkers, but there are also wide, open lawns ringed by trees where a cat can settle in and take it all in.
What Makes It Special
It's all about the river. The Humber runs right beside the main path, so there's always water to watch and listen to, and it gives the whole park its calm, tucked-away feel.
Away from the water, open lawns spread out between the trees. That's where our session took place, with a fallen log and a big weathered boulder doubling as natural posing spots.
Then there's the Old Mill Bridge, an arched stone bridge built in 1916 that gives the south end of the park a storybook feel. It's a heritage-designated landmark, and it makes an instant classic backdrop.
Visit in the fall and you might catch the salmon run. Chinook salmon swim up the Humber each year to spawn, leaping up the river's weirs while visitors line the banks to watch. It's one of the best free nature shows in the city.
One thing to know: this is an on-leash park for dogs, with no designated off-leash area. For cats, a harness and leash are a must anyway.
Beyond the Dog Park
Étienne Brûlé is part of the Humber River trail system, so you can keep walking north along the water for a longer outing, or head south toward the lake.
If you're making a day of it, High Park is just a short drive east for even more trails.
Bringing Your Cat?
Outdoor cat sessions are absolutely possible here with a little prep:
Practise with the harness and leash at home first, so the outdoors is the only new thing on the day.
Bring the carrier and a familiar blanket as a safe home base your cat can retreat to.
Come early on a weekday, when there are fewer dogs, cyclists and joggers on the trail.
Pick a quiet lawn away from the main path and the water, and let your cat set the pace.
Photographer’s Notes
Étienne Brûlé is a dream for natural, earthy portraits. For this session we stayed on the open lawns, where the fall trees became a soft, glowing backdrop, and a fallen log and a big boulder gave the cats natural perches at just the right height. For pets who are comfortable near water, the river and the stone bridge make beautiful backdrops too.
Golden hour is the magic window here: low sun filters through the coloured leaves and makes fluffy fur glow, and light coats look especially dreamy against all that warm colour. If you can, come early in the morning, when the trails are at their quietest. That's a big plus when your models are cats.
Fall is the showstopper, when the trees turn red, orange and gold. Shooting low, right at the cats' eye level, turns the lawn into a soft green foreground and the leaves into a wash of colour behind them.
Cats stay harnessed and leashed for the whole session, and we remove the leash in editing so the final photos still feel free and natural. The same goes for dogs, since this is an on-leash park.
The riverside paths can get muddy after rain, so a towel in the car is a good idea.
Zoey’s Verdict
“10/10 salmon season! Fish that jump? In Toronto? I have so many questions. Add a whole valley of new smells and I'm completely sold.”
Plan Your Visit
Address: 13 Crosby Ave, Toronto, ON (main entrance)
Hours: Open daily
Parking: Free parking at several access points around the park
Transit: Old Mill station, about a five-minute walk
Leash rules: On-leash park; dogs must stay leashed throughout, and cats should be harnessed and leashed at all times
Good to know: The Humber isn't a swimming spot, and water quality drops after heavy rain, so keep any dog water play to a quick paddle at the edge. Pack a few poop bags and a small bag for trash, since you'll cover a lot of ground.
